The latest retail sales figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for September this week revealed that £1 in every £10 spent in the UK is spent online.
Internet sales in September reached £539.4 million, around 9.6 per cent of total retail sales, compared with £416 million spent online in September 2010.
The figures reveal a growing trend that looks like continuing and could herald new trends in shopping and a new look for our high streets eventually.
In total, retail sales increased by 5.4 per cent in September compared with a year earlier, but this was in part due to the effects of inflation, as sales volumes only increased by 0.6 per cent.
However, this is the overall trend, and is not shared when looking at online retail sales alone which have increased at a faster pace in terms of volume of sales.
Other sectors of sales provided some startling trends. UK consumers are buying slightly more petrol but paying a lot more for it. Fuel sales values increased by 20 per cent but sales volumes rose by just 2.8 per cent.
The growth in online sales can help established high street retailers to re-invigorate their businesses. Next has lost some of its momentum on the high street but this has been reversed by excellent growth in online sales.
